Simhastha, Kumbh, Ardh Kumbh and Maha Kumbh: What Is the Difference?

By · · 5 min read

Quick answer

The Kumbh Mela is held at four places: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik-Trimbakeshwar. A Purna (full) Kumbh comes to each place once in 12 years, an Ardh (half) Kumbh is held every 6 years at Prayagraj and Haridwar, and the Maha Kumbh is the rarest gathering, at Prayagraj. Simhastha is the name of the Kumbh held when Jupiter is in Leo, at Nashik-Trimbakeshwar and Ujjain.

These names often get mixed up in news and on social media. Here is each one in plain words, and what it means for the 2027 Kumbh at Trimbakeshwar.

Kumbh Mela

Kumbh Mela is the general name. It is a great gathering of sadhus and pilgrims for a sacred bath in a holy river, at a time fixed by the positions of Jupiter, the Sun and the Moon.

The Kumbh is linked to the story of the pot (kumbh) of amrit. Drops of amrit are said to have fallen at four places, and those places host the Kumbh. Read about each of them in our guide to the four Kumbh cities.

Purna Kumbh

Purna means full. A Purna Kumbh is the full Kumbh of a place, held once in 12 years. Each of the four places has its own Purna Kumbh on its own cycle.

The 2027 Kumbh at Nashik-Trimbakeshwar is this kind of full, 12-yearly Kumbh. The last one here was in 2015. Read our history of the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh.

Ardh Kumbh

Ardh means half. The Ardh Kumbh is held every 6 years, halfway between two Purna Kumbhs. It is held only at Prayagraj and Haridwar, as PTI noted when the 2027 schedule was announced.

There is no Ardh Kumbh at Nashik-Trimbakeshwar or Ujjain. So if you hear of a Kumbh at Nashik, it is the full 12-yearly Simhastha.

Maha Kumbh

Maha means great. The Maha Kumbh is held at Prayagraj. It is said to come after 12 Purna Kumbhs, which makes it a once-in-144-years event. The 2025 Kumbh at Prayagraj was widely called the Maha Kumbh.

The Maha Kumbh is a Prayagraj event. The 2027 Kumbh at Nashik-Trimbakeshwar is not a Maha Kumbh; it is the Simhastha.

Simhastha

Simhastha is the name for a Kumbh held when Jupiter (Guru) is in Leo (Simha). This happens once in about 12 years. Both the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh on the Godavari and the Ujjain Kumbh on the Shipra are called Simhastha.

Our guide on what Simhastha means explains the word and the 12-year cycle in more detail.

What this means for the 2027 Kumbh at Trimbakeshwar

The 2027 Kumbh at Nashik-Trimbakeshwar is a Simhastha, the full Kumbh of this place. It runs from the flag hoisting on 31 October 2026 to 24 July 2028. The three Amrit Snans fall on 2 August, 31 August and 11 or 12 September 2027.
