Kumbh Mela 2027 First-Time Guide: Crowds, Family Travel and What to Pack

By · · 6 min read

Quick answer

If this is your first Kumbh, choose your day carefully, stay within walking distance of the bathing place, and keep your group small and close. The 2027 Amrit Snans at Trimbakeshwar fall on 2 August, 31 August and 12 September, in the monsoon, so pack for rain. On the main snan days, private vehicles are planned to be stopped outside Trimbakeshwar town.

The Kumbh here comes once in 12 years, and the crowds can be overwhelming the first time. Here is what to know before you come.

Choose your day: a snan day or a quieter day

The three Amrit Snans are the most important days, and the most crowded. The second, on 31 August 2027, is considered the most important. See every date in our Kumbh 2027 dates and Amrit Snan schedule.

There are also many other bathing days. PTI reported that Trimbakeshwar will have 53 auspicious bathing days during the Kumbh period, tied to Ekadashi, Purnima, Amavasya and other yogas. If you are travelling with elders or small children, one of these days may be a better choice.

Also keep in mind that August 2027 is Shravan, which already brings big crowds to Trimbakeshwar on Mondays. Our guide to the best time to visit Trimbakeshwar explains the seasons.

Know the snan-day rules

The administration has shared its plans for the main Amrit Snan days. These are plans as of now; check official announcements before you travel.

  • Private vehicles will not be allowed into Trimbakeshwar town.
  • Vehicles will be parked outside town, for example at Anjaneri, with free shuttle buses into town.
  • VIP darshan passes will be suspended.

The Maharashtra government has also announced an AI assistant for pilgrims called Kumbhdoot, for help with stay, transport, language and safety alerts. It is being rolled out in phases. We post news like this on our latest Kumbh updates page.

Staying safe in the crowd

  1. Reach the night before a snan. Do not plan to drive into town that morning.
  2. Agree on a meeting point. Pick a landmark everyone knows, and a time to meet if you get separated.
  3. Write phone numbers on paper. Put a slip with your mobile number and your stay's address in each child's and elder's pocket.
  4. Move with the crowd, not against it. Do not stop on narrow lanes or steps.
  5. Follow police and volunteers. Use the routes and barricades they set up.
  6. Bathe after the akhadas, or at another ghat. At Kushavarta, pilgrims can go in only after the akhadas have bathed. Read how they work in our guide to akhadas and the Amrit Snan.

Travelling with children and elders

Hold small children's hands at all times in crowded places. Keep elders away from the busiest hours and the narrowest lanes. If someone in your group cannot walk long distances, plan a stay close to Kushavarta Kund and the temple.

At our Bhakta Niwas, the campus is wheelchair accessible, the dining hall is on the ground floor, and volunteers help guide elderly devotees. See our facilities.

What to pack

  • An umbrella or raincoat; the Amrit Snans fall in August and September, during the monsoon.
  • A change of clothes, a small towel and a plastic bag for wet clothes.
  • Photo ID for every adult, and copies.
  • Your regular medicines, with a little extra.
  • A water bottle and some dry snacks.
  • A charged phone and a power bank.
  • Some cash in small notes.
  • A small torch for early mornings.

Pack light. You will walk a lot, and big bags are hard to manage in crowds.

Darshan at Trimbakeshwar during the Kumbh

If you also want darshan of the Jyotirlinga, the temple is normally open from 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM, and general darshan is free. Mobile phones and bags have to be deposited outside before you enter. See our temple timings guide and our Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga temple guide.

On snan days, queues will be very long and VIP passes are planned to be suspended. If you can, take darshan on a day before or after the snan.
