Narayan Nagbali Puja at Trimbakeshwar: Meaning, Process and How to Plan Three Days

By · · 7 min read

Quick answer

Narayan Nagbali is a three-day ritual performed at Trimbakeshwar by the town's local purohits. It begins with a purification bath at Kushavarta Tirtha, and the main rites are held at the Ahilya-Godavari Sangam. It is done for the peace of ancestors who died untimely deaths, and to remove the dosh believed to come from killing a snake. Since it takes three days, book your stay for at least three nights and fix the dates with your purohit first.

We are Shri Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan, Trimbakeshwar. Our Sansthan does not perform or arrange pujas; we run the Bhakta Niwas where many families stay for Narayan Nagbali. Here is what the ritual is, what happens over the three days, and how to plan your stay.

What is Narayan Nagbali?

Narayan Nagbali is two rituals done together. The local Purohit Sangh describes them like this:

  • Narayan Bali is performed for the souls of ancestors who died in certain untimely ways, so that they can find peace.
  • Nag Bali is performed to remove the dosh caused by killing a snake, especially a cobra.

The Purohit Sangh also describes the ritual as a way to purify the mind. Wikipedia notes that Narayan Nagbali is a three-day ritual and lists it among the rituals performed at Trimbakeshwar.

Why families perform it

Families perform Narayan Nagbali when they believe problems in their life are linked to their ancestors, often called pitra dosh, or when a family member has killed a snake. Your purohit or astrologer can advise whether Narayan Nagbali is needed.

If you are unsure which ritual is right for you, read our puja guide, which explains Narayan Nagbali, Kaal Sarp Shanti and Tripindi Shraddha side by side.

Why Trimbakeshwar

Trimbakeshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and stands near Brahmagiri hill, where the Godavari river begins. Pilgrim guides cite the Dharma Sindhu as saying Narayan Nagbali should be performed only at Trimbakeshwar. The ritual begins with a purification bath at Kushavarta Tirtha, the sacred kund in the town that is linked to the river, and the main rites are held at the Ahilya-Godavari Sangam. Read its story in our Kushavarta Kund guide, and about the temple in our Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga temple guide.

Who performs Narayan Nagbali

At Trimbakeshwar, Narayan Nagbali is performed by the local Tamrapatradhari purohits, organised as the Purohit Sangh. The main Vedic rites of Narayan Bali and Nag Bali, including the pinddaan, are held at the Ahilya-Godavari Sangam and the nearby Sati Maha-Shmashan, and a Free Press Journal report also names the sangam ghat as an important site for these rites. Kushavarta is only for the purification bath before the puja, and the purohit's home may be used for preparations such as the first sankalp. Your purohit will tell you where to come for each part.

Fix the dates, the timings and what you need to bring directly with your purohit. Our Sansthan only provides the stay and meals.

What happens over the three days

The exact steps are decided by your purohit. Based on the Purohit Sangh's description, the three days include:

  1. A bath at Kushavarta. The person performing the ritual bathes at the Kushavarta shrine before the rites.
  2. The sankalp. A statement of intent is taken before the Kalash is installed.
  3. The shraddha rites. These include Vishnu Tarpan, Pranpratishtha, Agnisthapana and the Purushasukta Havan.
  4. Ganesh puja and darshan. The last day includes worship of Lord Ganesha, and the Purohit Sangh lists darshan and worship of the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga among the steps.

Keep a change of clothes and a towel for the bath. Our temple timings guide has darshan hours.

Choosing your dates

Your purohit will suggest suitable dates for the ritual. When you pick between the dates he offers, keep these in mind.

  • Avoid big festival days such as Mahashivratri, Shravan Mondays and Kartik Purnima, when the ghats and priests are busiest. See the dates in our guide to the best time to visit Trimbakeshwar.
  • During the Simhastha Kumbh, avoid the Amrit Snan days of 2 August, 31 August and 12 September 2027. As currently planned, private vehicles will not be allowed into town on those days. See our Kumbh 2027 guide.
  • Weekdays from Tuesday to Thursday are calmer than Mondays and weekends.

Planning your three days in Trimbakeshwar

  1. Arrive the evening before the first day.
  2. Stay close to Kushavarta and the temple, so you do not depend on transport each morning.
  3. Keep your meals simple and nearby; you will be busy with the rituals.
  4. Bring photo ID for every adult in your group for check-in.
  5. Leave only after your purohit says the ritual is complete.

Trimbakeshwar is about 28 km from Nashik and 35–36 km from Nashik Road railway station. Read how to reach Trimbakeshwar.

Where to stay for Narayan Nagbali

Our Bhakta Niwas is on Jawahar Road, next to the New Bus Stand. Kushavarta is about 1.5 km away and the temple about 900 m, each a 10–15 minute walk. Check-in is open 24 hours, and each stay runs for 24 hours from check-in, so a three-day ritual usually needs three stays.

All 3 satvik vegetarian meals are included in the room rate, so you do not need to look for food between rituals. There is free parking, a free temple shuttle for guests, and wheelchair access for elders. See our rooms, facilities and stay rules.
